How To Talk Without Nose

anyone would say that today has seen a necked grebe (Podiceps auritus
, Slavonian grebe) and Arctic Loon ( Gavia arctica , Black-throated loon), and I do not think you've been in Mediterranean waters and, more specifically l'Albufera de València .

few days ago showed the two species in
Estany de Pujol and from BirdingAlbufera gave us notice. Soon I received a notice of Jana Marco that she and all the troupe come from Alicante to see them, so I waited until today to get closer.

We have gathered a lot of people: Julio Meraz, William Major, Jana Marco, Toni Mulet, Paul Adro and Clara. And, after giving a few laps we managed to locate the grebe. Aided by José Llácer have found the loon on the other side of the Estany. Milestone.

The rest of the day had little to highlight: first swallows (Hirundo rustica
, Barn swallow) in active step, a spectacular concentration of black-headed gulls ( Chroicocephalus ridibundus, Black -headed gull) in sludge fields, three copies of bastard sandpiper (Tringa glareola , Wood sandpiper), a great egret ( Casmerodius albus, Great Egret) ...

White Spots In Cats Feces

necked Loon and I should have brought the telescope ...

On Wednesday I returned from spending a few days Cantabria with friends. The plan was not birding, but be right there Santoña Marshes, Cape Garlic y. .. albeola a jug, it makes you aim the binoculars at the case and expect to have some huequecito.

Being in forums Natural Territory also makes things easier. When you meet people from different parts of the peninsula will save you having to search for information on how to go to sites and, often, give you good clues on how to get the best and where to find some birds. In this case I got in touch with Adina (M ª Angeles) and I can not be more grateful. Guided and accompanied me through the best areas of the Marshes Santoña told me how to get to where you made the RAM in the Cabo de Ajo, the journey from where I was staying (in garlic) to the White Maisma all stops of interest I had to do ...

sleepers also have some friends is a good advantage in these times. I birding every day (except one in which the lack of sleep took its toll on me) between nine and 0:30, which, for a trip that did not focus on the birding is more than I could wait.

The only flaw. That the telescope does not enter into the luggage. In many places I was eager to see some more (these sandpipers scurry along the beach, seabirds passing beyond the bottom in Ajo or those who do not accept gulls get too close to them) or some of the species I saw I could do better (I will not put these examples, if not tell you everything I saw)

Cabo de Ajo

The first day, Saturday, six, began with a visit to Cape Garlic, to accompany for a sustained time for observers ( It was cold and light rain was falling) and do the RAM in a different place of Cullera.

I took a little disappointed to discover that five minutes before I arrived, had seen a puffin (
Fratecula arctica, Puffin). They had also spent some Balearic shearwaters ( Puffinus mauretanicus , Balearic shearwater), but that does not bother me much, lol. Do not despair and sat down to see how things were going. I could not help much, almost everything we were going too far for my binoculars. Spent mainly gannets (Morus bassanus , Gannet) and some seagulls.

At one point, he had a rather curious seagulls. Had a typical flight, very fast and also distinct color pattern. It was something I had not seen before. We did not see anyone very well, but was identified as kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla
, Kittiwake). For me it was a kind neuve, but I decided not to tell the bimbo for poor observation I had.

After a while, looking around gannets passing between huge waves, I saw a duck-shaped figures crowning one of them. I gave the alarm and then began to look around the world. It was not easy, I'm not cleared to give information (as I missed here our little calm Mediterranean) and also managed to identify only with binoculars. To further complicate the matter concerned the birds would not stop diving. Finally, Jesus gave to them. Gradually, all were focused with their telescopes. At that time I had to leave just because he had been with M ª Angeles in Escalante. When I left I would agree that it was arctic loons (Gavia arctica
, Black-throated loon).

Escalante Before leaving I picked up one of my friends had already been raised, Jacob, and wished to accompany me to see what it was that so many hours of free time I stole.
On the way to the area we came across a stone marten (Martes foina
, Beech marten) hit and, a few yards away a merlin (Falco columbarius , Merlin) perched on a pole peacefully. This one I think I saw every day.

Falco peregrinus around Ajo

We arrived at Escalante something before M ª Angeles, so I began to see that moved by the area. The first surprise was a pretty big loon (Gavia immer , Great northern loon) that swam close enough to our position. My previous encounter with this species was a bird very far in the Ebro Delta in December. So the observation of this new issue I enjoyed it very much, almost as if for the first time I saw him.

Gavia immer

I got to go through the rest of what we saw: necked grebes (Podiceps nigricollis , Black-necked grebe), many curlews (Numenius arquata , Curlew) grazing in the meadows of the famous "polder Escalante, a group of geese ( Anser anser, Greylag goose) with them, some fighters ( Philomachus pugnax, Ruff) ...

was when he arrived in these M ª Angeles with the whole family, including the most promising young forum, Guille. After talking a while we set about the task, the search for interesting birds. They took out his telescope, which was a great joy for me because there were quite a distant bird identification needed urgently.

first thing we did was go over the side of geese. We soon find white-fronted geese (Anser
albifrons, White-fronted goose) that lay between them. I could not say how many because my eyes focused on other species. The bimbo would be my first trip, a barnacle goose (Branta leucopsis , Barnacle Goose) that grazed among them.

While we are still looking at what the area had started to rain harder, so we fled to
observatory Arenilla for shelter. They agree with the people who were organizing the "World Wetlands Day," so increased the number of telescopes and eyes staring.

The thing was quite lively. Followed the legions of curlew, black-necked grebe, great crested grebe (Podiceps cristatus
, Great crested grebe), egrets (Egretta garzetta , Little egret), some spoonbills (Platalea leucordi a, Spoonbill), whistling ( Anas penelope, Wigeon) kicked ...

Among the most notable, a merganser (
Mergus serrator, Red-breasted merganser) Pasco, and a yellow-legged gull (Larus michaellis , Yellow-legged gull) that a little more and get into the observatory of how close it was. Everyone there talking and she perfectly calm.

Larus michaellis

already when I started the round of telescopes things changed. Since I got my second a bimbo. For if a species of goose in the first morning was not enough, I got both. Right in front of us was a rather large side of brent goose (Branta bernicla , Brent goose). Beside them, another interesting observation, three gabions ( Larus marinus, Great black-backed gull). These are not one hundred percent bimbo. I saw them in New York, but the list really took the bird to see in Spain, I did see quite illusion.

Another telescope pointed to the host of an osprey (Pandion haliaetus
, Osprey). When I looked for him, was not there, lifting the light and look through the binoculars I could see fish and return them to the innkeeper with a fish in its talons. Do not know how many times I've seen it done this already, but it is a vision that is always exciting.

Chroicocephalus ridibundus and Haemantopus ostralegus

After a while the rain calmed down and we could leave the observatory. We went to the port Santoña , where according to M ª Angeles told me, had spent time a small group of auks (Alca torda , Razorbill). Those who at the observatory had told us last week there were only two copies, so do not expect to find, but try not to stay.

When we arrived the weather turned fatal. There was nothing in the port (just a couple of grebes crested grebes and some comorbidities (Phalacrocorax Aristotelis
, Shag)), and began to make time to return. We said goodbye and we parted. On that day there would be no birding.

The next day's birding was not until the eighth day of February, Monday. Santoña turned to go, starting with the polder Escalante. Birds that moved there did not vary much. As the only remarkable thing about the previous day, a group of curlews (Burhinus
oedicnemus , Stone curlew) who flew with the arrival of a common buzzard (Buteo buteo , Common buzzard) .

View from the observatory Arenilla

The Grit observatory not find anything remarkable, so I went directly to the port of Santona to see if there was something interesting . And what if I found it. Three necked grebes (Podiceps auritus , Slavonian grebe) are zambullñian near the pier. Since there were four bimbos.

Finally I approached the observatory
Bengoa, to see if there was unlucky with whooper swans (Cygnus cygnus , Whooper swan) who had been there previously. Unfortunately, this bimbo did not reach me.

Then I went back to Ajo (where we stayed). And with my friends, walking around the cliffs and beaches found myself face to face with another bimbo more. A good specimen of a second winter gull
argétea ( Larus argentatus, Herring Gull). He had seen some other doubt I had, but with this I was totally sure it was before one of them. Like the gull, there is a real bimbo. He had seen this species in Holland, but always more illusion EHAC see "home."

afternoon, in another walk in the same areas, brought another surprise gaviotil and another bimbo to me. A Gull (Larus canus , Common gull) rested on a flock of seagulls willing to spend the night there. An amazing day from the point of view of the gulls. Two beaches, two bimbos.

The last morning I spent the most rare of all the bimbos he could do (well, actually could get to make up to three): the jug
albeola (Bucephala albeola , Bufflehead) of White Marsh .

White Marsh

I was wrong a bit with out having to take on the highway, so I arrived about ten o'clock, later than I would have liked, the time for me would take over. Arrive and took a first look at the marsh. There was a lot tufted duck (Aythya fuligula , Tufted duck) and European ( Aythya ferina, Common Pochard), but no trace of albeola (or the Goldeneye (Bucephala clangula , Goldeneye) either.)

So I dedicated myself to be a little thinking maybe there was more ponds in the back. It was, in part, a waste of time. I saw nothing remarkable there, the time is exhausting me and I still saw the albeola. I came back to the place where he had mepezado. I took the binoculars to his eyes and there it was. The first focus is the duck that he was looking all morning.

tried to make a picture after a few minutes of observation, among the reeds in front that kept me focused and never stopped diving for a moment, I had to leave without him immortal.

Cygnus olor

was to begin the search of the kiss when it started to rain, and immediately afterwards to hail. I ran back to the car and waited a while. Given that things did not improve much, I turned around and left. I had to leave caspica-eye and the gull (Larus cachinnans , Caspian gull) from the Black Marsh could not try them.

a while I stopped over in
Somo, where he still was not raining, but not find anything that I had not seen yet. The most notable a gull on the beach and a group of plovers large (Charadrius hiaticula , Ringed plover) quite large.

Larus marinus

This day is all I could birding in the afternoon. My friends told me to go somewhere and I proposed to try to locate the whooper swans, which felt like bimbos and I were running away.

started by the Escalante polder once again. There were more or less as usual, but I saw something white moved in a branch of the trees in the background. M ª Angeles told me that there is where it used
move sacred ibis ( Threskiornis aethiopicus, Sacred Ibis). Given the distance, only with binoculars, I could not get to see whether it was him or some egret. I waited for a while staring and finally stuck his head out from between the feathers. This contrast black and white and elongated beak left no room for doubt. New species!

From here we went straight to Bengoa. As we walked to the observatory saw in the meadows beside the water, two white spots that stood out above the rest. My bimbo I expected.

Egretta garzetta

When we reached the observatory I was watching for a while. Another bimbo strikeout. The light was moving slowly, I had nine new species, I could not complain, I had left almost everything right. It had been a good trip.

As I thought this did not stop to fly cattle egrets (Bubulcus ibis
, Cattle egret) that went to roost. A friend said:

"Look, there goes a black"

thinking I looked a cormorant (
Phalacrocroax carbo, Great Cormorant), but dismissed it when I saw the bird flying with als egrets. The curved beak and long legs and such a fast flutter could not be different, a glossy ibis (Plegadis falcinellus , Glossy ibis).

And with that ends the chronicle of my adventures in Cantabria, I can only add:

EXPS I Olympus Binoculars: € 195
spend five days in Cantabria: € 150
your friends (not birders), insist that an appointment is yours and that it must to them:

Priceless

Slang Terms Bachelorette

Evolution ... New

Uff, how much time without going through here, right? I hope you have missed me ... hehehe Of course this time without appearing here has an explanation: January exams and almost total absence of field trips with outstanding results.

Why show up today? Because the exams ended last week and he has come into my hands a work of art. (I think it will be yet another analysis made it, but it touches)

When in 2001 appeared market a bird guide who claimed to be the most complete in Spain and Europe, I imagine, would be people who would look with some skepticism. It was soon to prove to everyone that he really was and that few general guidelines (if not any) could you compare. I'm talking of course of the Collins (also known as "Svensson", "the Mullarney" or "Robin").

I think I am right in saying that the whole world seemed the best guide to birds in Europe and that could hardly be surpassed. Well, it has been. What seemed impossible has occurred. The second edition of the Collins again becoming an indispensable book.

a second edition is not any, which are fixed two or three errors have been committed in the former and added four drawings and two maps of distribution. No. The new edition brings many new things, new sheets, new species, new maps ...

let's look at some of these developments in photos, as they say a picture is worth a thousand words and not feel like typing.

As I said earlier in this guide have been new species. Well are those who have left the rank of subspecies to become separate species or those that were not yet represented in the previous edition. It is for example the case of southern shrike (Lanius Meridionali s, Iberian gray shrike) or yellow-legged gulls (Larus michaellis , Yellow-legged gull), Armen ( L. armenicus , Armenian gull) and caspica (L. cachinnans , Caspian gull).
As I have seen on other sites photos of the film I put the gulls of our shrike is pretty good (in the pictures, right always 2nd Edition).

Plus it has allowed them to add some subspecies shrike blade, especially those aimed to be new species: link

Another innovation that brings the guide is that the maps have been updated. They have also included maps of the Atlantic islands, which always seemed a failure of the previous edition, and I think very well have solved.

In this picture we see one of the maps and other islands of the films that have changed, that of the common fly (Phylloscopus collybita , Chiffchaff). Also separated from the fly appears as Iberian ( P. ibericus , Iberian Chiffchaff).

new panels have also been found in some species. This is the case of the Siberian Crane (Grus leucogeranus , Siberian crane) or, for example, the Balearic shearwater (Puffinus yelkouan , yelkouan shearwater), a species that had more desire to I had an independent film (before he appeared with our Balearic).

Other films have been completely redrawn. I found especially good of the eagle owl (Bubo bubo , Eagle owl). In general the new owls plates are spectacular.

Finally some species have been introduced and the exhaust section of the species treated normally (and vice versa). A good example is this film:

is a good measure for the further development mainly to get these birds (which are not always present in Europe through leaks) at both the drawings as tab, while clearly introduced species such as parrots are less important ne phone.

Thus, as has been understood from the beginning, I think it's worth the new guide, even with the first edition. Especially when you consider the price for leaving if we look good (in my case 20 € with shipping included). So, if you are not at odds with the English I think it is a book that you will not regret. If English is not you, touch you expect more and also come out more expensive, lol
